Punjab CHO Eligibility 2026: Qualification, Age Limit, Council Registration, Language Rules & Selection Conditions
Punjab’s CHO recruitment under the National Health Mission (NHM) is structured slightly differently from many other states. While most states focus almost entirely on nursing-based CHOs, Punjab has historically allowed multiple qualification routes in some cycles, including AYUSH candidates, and has shown stricter attention to language and local suitability.
Because of these variations, many aspirants either apply incorrectly or assume they are eligible when they are not.
This guide explains Punjab’s CHO eligibility clearly - what usually applies, what can change, and what you must verify before applying.
1. Educational Qualification - Who Can Apply
Punjab follows a multi-pathway eligibility structure for CHO recruitment.
Commonly Accepted Qualifications
Depending on the recruitment cycle, Punjab has allowed:
✔ B.Sc Nursing ✔ Post Basic B.Sc Nursing ✔ GNM (with conditions) ✔ BAMS (Ayurveda) - in some cycles
Punjab has been one of the few states that openly experimented with AYUSH CHOs in some recruitment rounds, but this is cycle-dependent and not guaranteed every year.
If you are a nursing graduate, your chances are generally higher and more consistent.
2. Community Health / Bridge Training Requirement
Punjab, like most states, treats CHO as a public health leadership role, not a hospital role.
That means community health exposure matters.
What This Means
If you have:
• B.Sc Nursing or Post Basic B.Sc Nursing → Your curriculum usually includes community health • GNM → You may need a bridge or community health certificate • AYUSH → You may need a CHO-specific training program
In some cycles, Punjab has specifically mentioned 6-month bridge training or CHO-specific orientation programs after selection.
This requirement often appears in the training and appointment section rather than the eligibility section, but it is still binding.
3. Professional Registration Rules
Punjab is strict about professional registration.
What You Need
✔ Punjab Nursing Council registration (preferred) OR ✔ Registration with another state council + migration to Punjab Council (if permitted)
If you are applying through an AYUSH route:
✔ Registration with the Punjab Board of Indian Medicine or relevant council
Failure to regularize your registration can result in cancellation of appointment even after selection.
4. Age Limit & Relaxations
Punjab has historically maintained a moderate age band for CHO roles.
Typical Age Pattern
Minimum: 18-21 years Maximum: 37-40 years
Punjab sometimes sets a lower upper age cap than states like MP or Rajasthan.
Relaxations generally apply for:
• SC • ST • OBC • PwBD • Ex-servicemen
Exact limits always depend on the year’s notification.
5. Language & Local Suitability Rules (Important)
Punjab is one of the states that may include language-related requirements.
In some recruitments, candidates were required to:
• Have Punjabi as a subject in Matriculation • Or show basic Punjabi language proficiency
This is not always listed under “eligibility,” but it can be enforced during document verification.
If you are from outside Punjab, you must carefully check this clause.
6. Experience Requirement
Experience is usually not mandatory for eligibility.
However:
• Rural experience • Community work • NGO/public health exposure
…may give you an edge in selection or posting preference.
GNM candidates especially benefit from prior experience.
7. Who Is Commonly Declared Ineligible
Punjab applicants are often rejected due to:
❌ Missing Punjab council registration ❌ Ignoring language requirement ❌ GNM without bridge/public health training ❌ Age miscalculation ❌ Wrong category certificate ❌ Incomplete documentation
